I have learned more in MCJ 102 as a graduate student than I did in any other graduate class. Perhaps it is because I did not have any public relations writing experience prior to this semester. Regardless, I was able to learn writing styles and perform assignments that I could put in a portfolio which enhanced my knowledge in interviews. This was hands down my favorite class because I actually learned an applicable skill rather than abstract theories that I have already forgotten. This class has made me look forward to taking other writing courses that build off the skills I picked up this semester.
I have learned a lot about myself this semester in terms of the field I have chosen to study for graduate school. I really enjoy public relations and I am confident that I will be valuable asset wherever I land a job. From an academic perspective, however, I have a difficult time studying topics such as theory and research just because they do not interest me as much. I know research is a valuable aspect of the field which I am going to try to get better at. Overall, though, I am proud of my progress this semester and I look forward to finishing the semester.

Michael Brown's Stepfather
Michael Brown's stepfather has been very vocal since Brown's death at the hands of a Ferguson police officer. After the jury decided more evidence was needed to find Darren Wilson guilty of his death, Brown's stepfather encouraged protesters to burn Ferguson to the ground. Brown's stepfather represents one of two sides of protesting that America has seen in recent months amid the controversy. Protesting is an integral part of society that must remain a civilized act. Some people, such as Brown's stepfather, would rather resort to violence. Others are willing to maintain a peaceful protest that encourages meaningful dialogue.
I think this a major issue right now because whether a society chooses to engage in violence has an impact on the outcome of the issue. If society gives their government a reason to use force to subdue them then society is defeating itself. One of the major aspects of protest that people should focus on right now is doing it in a way that forces the organization you are protesting to take action, and to do it in a way that does not defeat yourself.

E3 Health Initiative
In July 2014 the City of Hattiesburg was awarded a $250,000 grant from the National League of Cities to address a health coverage crisis in Hattiesburg. The E3 Health Initiative is aims at reducing the number of uninsured children and families in Hattiesburg by providing technical assistance to those seeking to obtain health coverage through Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Plan (CHIP). In the Lillie Burney Elementary, Rowan Elementary, and Hawkins Elementary school zones alone there are roughly 19,000 people. Of those, 6,000 are eligible for Medicaid/CHIP but are unenrolled. The E3 Health Initiative is temporary grant funded program that will last 18 months. By December 2015, the program hopes to reduce the number of uninsured in those school zones by 50%, enrolling 3,000 people in health insurance.
With changes to the state Medicaid policies as well as national changes to health care law, there are new barriers facing those eligible to apply for Mediciad/CHIP. One of those barriers is that applications are now predominately submitted online. Based on the demographics of the eligible population, many of these individuals do not have access to the equipment needed to successfully complete the application process. The hope of this program is to address some of these barriers and make it easier for people to get the health coverage they deserve.

Writing in Today's World
Written and spoken language operates on assumptions and impressions making all communication variable depending on the delivery and interpretation of each message. If 80% of communication is miscommunication, we are all stumbling to clearly communicate in conversations, text messages, emails, blogs, and tweets whether we are aware of it or not. Now more than ever our words travel beyond our own individual cultural vacuum and are globally heard. Clear communication is a matter of perspective and in today's diverse society miscommunication dominates conversations.
Communication is ambiguous so writing in plain, simple language will limit miscommunication. Writing to a lower literacy level should be considered when trying to communication to multi-generational and multi-cultural readers. The more pluralistic the world becomes the less likely we are to clearly communicate with one another. The goal in writing and communicating in today's world is to reduce instances of miscommunication.

PR vs. Advertising
Public relations and advertising share similar aspects in certain regards and many differences in others. Advertising tends to focus on the promotion of a certain product that a company is trying to push. For example, the car company Ford wants to push the new model of an F-150 so they will hire an advertising team to design a campaign. Some public relations practitioners are asked to do advertising as well. The public relations department at Wesley Medical Center is also responsible for pushing the Tiny Toes program to mothers who have recently had a child at Wesley.
Public relations tends to perform a much broader ranger of tasks compared to advertising. Public relations professionals who work for firms are hired to represent the interests of their clients. Much of the work revolves around maintaining the image of a company or containing a crisis that occurs. For example, AIG was caught spending bailout money on lavish vacations during the Great Recession and then hired a PR firm to reverse their image.

Broadcast vs. Print
Writing for print and broadcast have differences and similarities that are geared towards the mediums that project the message. Both are similar in the fact that must be simplified and to the point in order for the message to be accessible by anyone who wants to read it. Writing for print allows for more detail and background information because there is more space to write an article. However, focusing on facts is the primary objective rather than opinions. Broadcast tends to be much more simplified because the script is intended to be spoken. The wording must clear and concise which allows for the broadcaster to read it easily and the listener to understand it.
I prefer writing print because it allows more freedom than broadcast. I feel like writing for broadcast limits the personal touch writers can incorporate into their work. Just because print allows for more information lets writers incorporate their style into the piece which makes the work more personal and enjoyable.
Current Event 4
Bill Cosby has recently made startling headlines in what appears to be a sexual assault case that stems back nearly 30 years ago. The story broke the news after one female confessed that she had been assaulted by Cosby many years ago. Since that confession has taken place 22 other women have come forward accusing Cosby of the same thing. These stories are becoming fairly regular among celebrities in the 21st century. Darren Sharper was similarly accused of drugging several women and assaulting them over a multi-year period. Both Cosby and Sharper have been accused of putting drugs in women's.
The Cosby allegations come on the heels of domestic violence headlines that involve Ray Rice punching his wife in an elevator that left her unconscious for several minutes. The growing theme of abuse against females is steadily drawing more attention especially towards professional athletes. The NFL has set up a foundation that raises awareness for domestic violence in response to many of its player becoming involved such issues.

Current Event 3
As racial tensions rise amid the death of Michael Brown at the hands of a police officer a second death has occurred that has incensed the nation even more. Eric Garner, a black man from New York City, was choked to death by a white police officer named Daniel Pantaelo for refusing to submit to arrest. The incident began when police approached Garner on the side of the street for selling illegal cigarettes. After a moment of conversation a police officer attempted to handcuff Garner but Garner refused. Immediately, Pantaleo put Garner in a choke-hold from behind and would not let go even though Garner was stressing that he could not breathe.
Protests have begun to erupt in New York City as citizens have become increasingly frustrated at the police brutality that is seemingly racially motivated in cases such as these. People are also beginning to question whether the justice system is treating police cases fairly when the evidence is stacked against law enforcement. We have seen attempts to correct the situation as President Obama requested nearly $70 million for body cameras that law enforcement officials must wear when on the job. Hopefully, more measures will be put in place to avoid issues like this entirely in the future.
